The Bachelor of Business course provides students with a comprehensive foundation in the core concepts necessary to pursue a successful professional career in business, as well as the practical application of these concepts. Students have the option to take a broad course of study across the key areas of business practice, or to specialise in human resource management (HRM) or management. Students study in small classes which use a range of contemporary teaching methods including the use of practical case studies, simulations and applied projects.

The HRM Major has met the criteria for course accreditation and is currently accredited by the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI). Accreditation is reviewed every three years by the AHRI National Accreditation Committee.
Students applying for this course can be assured that the quality of core units map onto the AHRI Model of Excellence for HR Practitioners and Academics, a recognised benchmark of HR best practice and standards.

Program description

The WIN Bachelor of Business degree is a quality program for the start of a dynamic and exciting business career. It is a flexible business degree which offers a wide range of study opportunities and subject choices, allowing you to construct a program of study that best meets your interests and future work plans. You can choose to specialise in Human Resource Management or Management. Completion of this course prepares you for employment in local, national and government organisations. Elective subjects can be selected from a variety of disciplines including Interactive Media, Professional Accounting and Information Technology.

Subject description

Business Law (FDN121)
This subject provides an introduction to law from a business perspective and provides students with an introductory understanding of such areas as the structure and operation of the Australian legal system, tort law, the nature of different types of legal entities as well as the principles of commercial, contract, agency, consumer and competition law.

Business Statistics and Data Analysis (FDN123)
This subject provides students with skills essential for undertaking quantitative analysis and introduces students to how statistics are used in each functional area of business. Students learn how to locate, select, analyse and apply statistical tools to qualify and evaluate data as information for business decision-making.

E-Business Strategies and Practices (MAN362)
E-Business Strategies and Practices explores e-commerce business models – B2C, B2B, e-Business start-ups, e-marketing. electronic payments systems, privacy, security and fraud as well as mobile commerce.

Management Engaged Project (MAN364)
The subject provides students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in a contemporary work and organisational environment. Students are required to work with an industry partner either in the form of a structured internship or by undertaking a project for a client or by engaging in a simulated case study that mirrors the workplace environment. The form of engagement will be subject to availability and a competitive process.

Economics for Business (FDN113)
This subject introduces students to the fundamental concepts, models, theories and applications of microeconomics and macroeconomics. It offers an introductory treatment of market structures, supply and demand, consumer choice, inflation, interest rates and foreign exchange. Students investigate current macroeconomic events, policy issues and debates from the perspective of Australian business. The subject material also develops students’ analytical, communication and ethical thinking skills.

Ethics and Business (MAN231)
Ethics and Business is a cornerstone subject looking at ethics, law, morals and self-interest, ethical reasoning, as well as ethics in relation to customers, employees, the community and the environment.

Finance Fundamentals (FDN112)
The subject develops an understanding of the core principles of finance and their application in financial decision-making. Topics include important financial concepts, Australia’s financial institutions and the nature of financial statements, financial planning, financial markets, capital budgeting decisions and financing decisions.

Human Resource Management (MAN351)
Human Resource Management looks at job analysis and design, recruitment, selection, remuneration, supervision, performance measurement, negotiation, counselling, and dispute resolution.

Management and Organisations (FDN124)
In this subject students critically explore management theories and apply them to practical contemporary situations. Students’ understanding of the nature of organisations and the role of managers is developed. The implications of internal organisational factors and external forces for effective management are examined. The subject material also develops students’ analytical, communication and ethical thinking skills.

Managing Across Cultures (MAN352)
Managing Across Cultures. What is culture? We look at cultures within organisations and across borders; cultural awareness in decisions, communications, negotiations and in business relationships.

Managing Innovation and Change (MAN232)
Managing Innovation and Change looks at innovation and competitive advantage, innovation incubators, implementing, monitoring and measuring change, as well as intellectual property management.

Organizational Behaviour (MAN241)
Organisational Behaviour is about individuals – motivation, job design, satisfaction, decision making and stress and groups – dynamics, power, politics and conflict, as well as performance management.

Principles of Accounting 1A (FDN111)
Understanding accounting concepts and processes is an important foundation for a career in business. Financial information is measured and communicated in modern society utilising the accounting skills and knowledge developed in this subject including technical skills, analysis, critical thinking, communication and ethical thinking.

Principles of Marketing(FDN114)
This subject covers the basic principles and key concepts of marketing including market segmentation, target marketing strategies, brand development and marketing communications. It develops an understanding of the practical aspects of marketing and of the overall process of planning, implementation and control in the contemporary business context. This subject also develops an understanding of the marketing mix including pricing, product life cycle, distribution channels and promotion strategies.

Strategic Management and Leadership (MAN361)
Strategic Management and Leadership explores strategic planning – vision, mission and goals; market and competitor analysis, SWOT analysis, balanced scorecard, as well as leadership theories, styles and practices.

Managing the Employment Relationship (HRM221)
This subject introduces students to the institutions, actors, and processes which shape the terms and conditions of work in Australia. An understanding of relevant key theoretical perspectives provides the basis for examining employee relations issues more conceptually. Students will examine the social, economic and legal framework of employment relations in Australia and the nature of power and control in the employment relationship. Students develop practical negotiation and advocacy skills needed for effective management of employment relations.

Talent and Reward Management (HRM352)
In this subject students critically explore theories and approaches to talent and reward management. Centring on the development of talent and reward management frameworks and their implications on performance, students develop an understanding of how such frameworks are determined, established and should be critiqued. The ongoing need to achieve strategic alignment between talent, performance and reward strategies are also examined. The subject material develops students’ analytical, communication and strategic thinking skills.

Advanced Financial Accounting (SPA351)
Financial Management is concerned with investment valuation, risk and return, portfolio theory, capital budgeting, as well as capital structure and policy.

Auditing and Assurance (SPA352)
Auditing and Assurance looks at the auditor’s duties, the audit process, audit evidence, audit opinion, auditing standards, as well as Forensic accounting.

Taxation Law and Practice (SPA353)
This subject provides an introduction to the Australian Tax System and the laws upon which it is based. It will deal with the taxes applicable to our three levels of government but will concentrate on the main Federal Taxes: Income Tax; FBT; GST; CGT. Students will need to distinguish between ordinary and statutory income as well as general and specific deductions. The course covers jurisdictional concepts such as residence and source as well as depreciation, trading stock and accounting methods. It also looks at tax applicable to different business entities such as sole traders; partnership; corporations and trusts. Finally, the course covers the role of the ATO; tax administration; returns amendments and appeals as well as consideration of tax avoidance and schemes.

Human Resource Strategy (HRM360)
This subject focuses on the strategic nature of human resource management (HRM) functions within an organisational context. It develops an appreciation of the relationship between human resource management strategy and organisational goals. Relevant concepts and theories which help to explain the relationship between organisation strategy and HRM are examined and used to analyse the contemporary HRM challenges and opportunities facing organisations.

Entry requirements

Applications are assessed on previous studies and other academic qualifications and experience.

To satisfy the general entrance requirements for admission to a course, applicants must meet at least one of the following entry requirements:

  • A formal qualification considered equivalent to an Australian Year 12
  • An approved foundation studies program
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • Completed [or partially completed] course from a university, college or other accredited tertiary institution
  • Completed [or partially completed] TAFE college course or other accredited
  • Post-secondary institution, including TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate

In addition, international students must be 18 years of age or over at the time that they commence the course for which they have applied.
